More Than Code: Reflections from an Outreachy Intern Social Chat Session

Introduction

One of the things that has stood out to me during my Outreachy internship journey is the sense of community. Recently, we had a social video conferencing call with fellow Outreachy interns, and it turned out to be more than just a casual hangout, it was a space for learning, sharing, and encouragement.

A Safe Space to Share Challenges

During the session, we openly talked about the challenges we’ve been facing, whether related to remote work, communication, confidence, or adjusting to open source culture. It was reassuring to realize that many of us were navigating similar struggles, and even more encouraging to hear how others were actively overcoming them.

Mentorship and Support

We also discussed our mentors, what has been working well, the support we’ve received, and how to handle situations when things don’t go as smoothly. These conversations helped normalize asking for help and reminded us that mentorship is a two-way learning process.

Special shout-out to Omotola E. Omotayo, who anchored the session beautifully and ensured everyone felt comfortable contributing.

First-Time Remote Work Experiences

For many interns, this is their first time working remotely. We talked about building discipline, managing time zones, communicating asynchronously, and staying motivated while working from home. Hearing practical tips and real-life experiences from peers made remote work feel far less intimidating.

Conversations About Conferences

Another exciting part of the discussion was around conferences. We explored:

  • The different types of conferences

  • How to attend as a participant

  • How to apply as a speaker

  • Roles like convener or organizer

This part of the session really opened my eyes to opportunities beyond contributing code, especially around visibility, networking, and knowledge sharing.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the session felt like a breakout space designed just for interns, to connect, reflect, and grow together. It was a reminder that Outreachy is not only about technical contributions, but also about community, learning, and shared experiences.

I’m grateful for spaces like this that make the remote journey feel less lonely and a lot more human.
